The street parades burst into applause and the agile movement of the performers on stilts made people look wide-eyed, fearing they might miss a moment. The spectators are always looking up in excitement, while the painter dips his head down and works rapidly on the paper.
A few random pencil lines painted with simple watercolor is an instant scene of a temple fair. Walking into the roaring crowds with his sketchbook, Chen Cheng-po not only took part in the City God procession in 1933, but also left a rare visual record of his hometown.
