In 1624, the Dutch United East India Company (VOC) occupied the Anping Sandbank off the main island of Taiwan and built forts and towns one after another, with the huge fortress Fort Zeelandia serving as the symbol of VOC domination in Taiwan. After the rule of the Zheng Group and the Qing Dynasty, the fortress was so dilapidated that the bricks and tiles were demolished and removed for other uses. When the Japanese ruled Taiwan, the original site was converted into the Anping Customs Dormitory, the lighthouse and the Guest House was built successively, which were called “Anping Castle”, “Chikan Castle”, and “ゼーランディア城趾”. After the change of government following World War II, the site was renamed Anpei Old Fort and the lighthouse was moved to the Anping Sunset Viewing Platform.
