The gradually ascending side street is San-ceng-cuo Jie (Triple-tiered-housing Street). In the past, the civilian houses in Tamsui were built according to the terrain, and the Western- and Japanese-style buildings were constructed successively. It is a metaphor for the layers of deposits in local history that these buildings have different cultural styles and features, sprawl high and low, and mix freely. The side street being the axis, a harmonious contrast is presented by the two Western-style buildings standing straight and tall on the right against the Fujian-style buildings piling up irregularly on the left. In the painting the small town is unique in its own style, where the stack of houses is well-laid-out and the stability is established in the mass of detail.
