Tamsui After Rain
ca. 1937-1945, oil on canvas, 45.5 × 53 cm, private collection

The clouds of war gathering over the Pacific Ocean, after rain Tamsui seems shrouded in a haze of warfare. However eye-catching is the big, red Chinese character 祝 (Zhu, that is, blessing) on the send-off banner, in a procession so sparse, there is no joyful atmosphere as expected. Jiukan Street (Nine-shops Street) meanders through the old neighborhood of Tamsui; such a nostalgic place is appropriate for the procession to bid adieu to the hometown. Gazing after the departing procession, Chen Cheng-po silently outlines the shadow of the era and leaves his witness for history.
