Missionary Elizabeth Cooke Ritchie, wife of Pastor Hugh Ritchie, tutored women in learning and reading in Taiwan and was instrumental in getting Pastor Ritchie to propose a girls’ school to the Tainan Missionary Council. After the death of Pastor Ritchie in 1879, Elizabeth continued to promote and donate to the establishment of the girls’ school. In July 1884, the girls’ school building and the girls’ dormitory were finally completed on the southeast side of Rev. William Campbell’s residence, which is an important historical venue for witnessing women’s education in Taiwan.
