Chen Cheng-po exudes confidence as an artist in the painting, and behind him, the Chinese hibiscuses blossom brightly with summer colors. The painter, now at the age of 35, had discovered an ideal way to express himself in the realm of oil painting.
Chen, who just had travelled from Japan to Shanghai, now marched into another stage of his artistic career. There in Shanghai, he readily absorbed the concepts and craftsmanship of traditional Chinese paintings and sought out themes of landscape different from the ones he had employed before. Self-Portrait (2), it may be presumed, embodies his hope for and confidence in the future.
