Railroad tracks, factories, chimneys, cables, huge concrete buildings and rumbling machinery – the Chiayi Lumber Factory, known as the “First in East Asia,” was a marvel of modernity. By the early 1920s Chiayi had developed into a thriving metropolis with its lumber industry at its core. The lumber factory in the northern suburbs of the city was the driving force behind this change.
During Chen Cheng-po’s youth, Chiayi underwent tremendous changes. This watercolor painting may be regarded as a kind of historical testimony.
