Tamsui is viewed from a hillside north of the small town while the pedestrians are moving on the main road to the distant complex of red tile houses. Beyond the high street is the harbor with a ship billowing smoke and berthed beside the landing stage; this is represented with a hint of vigor at a commercial port. The Tamsui River off Bizaitou (i.e. the Nose) winds like a silk ribbon. The Xiaopingding Mountain, which stretches across the upper part of the painting, draws the whole landscape into the picture plane. The landscape on the edge of this town seldom attracts the attention of other painters. Notwithstanding, the ingenious approach to view angle reflects Chen Cheng-po’s careful examination of the local life.
