When Chen Cheng-po looks up from the foot of the hill town, one peculiar building extending at right angles blocks his line of sight. The Western-style building with a row of arches along the outer veranda has an eye-catching expanse of white; at first sight it appears somewhat grotesque in a community surrounded with adobe houses. However, on close examination, the red roof tiles and brick wall of the building really exhibit strong local characteristics. Combining the Chinese and Western elements in the buildings and mixing the local and foreign features in the landscape, this painting is an epitome of the township history, which projects the foreign cultures that had met and blended in Tamsui.
