The irrigation ditch meets the road. The upward-curving ridges on top of the temples hook into a striking arc on the street. The scenery in front of Chen Cheng-po’s eyes is the landscape of his hometown, which he once introduced to Japan through his paintings. In contrast to his earlier masterpiece in the Imperial Art Exhibition, the impact of modernity seems to have further shaped the order and cleanliness in this painting. Staring into the distance at the Chiayi city street, Chen Cheng-po once again completed yet another similar landscape painting, perhaps leaving behind some sort of record to witness the city’s transformation.
