The cone-shaped landmark stands beside the Western Railway Line, a towering monument that symbolizes the glory of the empire and encapsulates the characteristics of southern Taiwan in two lines of scientific description. “23 degrees, 27 minutes and 4 seconds north latitude,” It is these numbers that nurture the rich diversity of the island of Formosa. The luxuriant mountains, the turquoise blue sea, the sunny fields, and the numerous scenes of the island on the Tropic of Cancer will all be expressed in Chen Cheng-po’s paintings in breathtaking colors.
